Gay marriage: Tory MPs Peter Bone and Nick Herbert
A Conservative MP has called for a referendum on plans to allow gay marriage, saying "let the people decide".
Peter Bone said it was not in any party's manifesto and it would unite his party. He said it could be held on the same day as the planned in/out referendum on the UK's relationship with Europe.
Nick Herbert said allowing gay marriage would not damage his party, and polls showed a majority backed gay marriage and support was rising.
MPs are voting later on Tuesday on the Marriage - Same Sex Couples - Bill.
