Claims that London was subsidising the UK economy were "rubbish and prejudice" said Mike Smith, the carpet king of the north, who hails from Yorkshire.

He dismissed views in Kelvin MacKenzie's Daily Politics film about the work ethics in the north against the south.

The former newspaper editor said London was a "net producer of wealth" and he questioned why London and its commuter belt should support other parts of the UK.
