Dr Sarah Wollaston on open primary candidate selection

The prime minister previously said open primaries to choose candidates were an "exciting opportunity" and the coalition agreement promised 200 of them nationwide, but it looks like they have fallen out of favour.

Conservative MP Dr Sarah Wollaston defended the method which saw her selected, and reckoned it could bring in more diverse members, and that Parliament "does not look and sound like wider Britain".

She debated with former MP Gyles Brandreth who said - unlike the US method - the UK open primaries had "not quite worked fully" and a "few odd balls have been thrown up".
