Power cuts: Fallon on blackouts and new power plants

Britain will not have industrial blackouts, with new power plants being turned on and a back-up of mothballed plants able to be brought back online, said the business minister.

Michael Fallon listed new power plants that have opened under the coalition government with six gas plants, two onshore and two offshore wind farms and "there are more coming", with four or five to open before 2015.

He said "Nothing was done under Labour and we have got a long way to catching up."

Asked about the likelihood of power cuts, Mr Fallon said it was "low" and added: "We are not going to have people sent home at lunchtime or industrial blackouts. We are going to have the system better managed."
