Gibraltar Day: Rock's relations with UK and Spain

The British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar celebrates its National Day on Tuesday, marking the anniversary of its 1967 sovereignty referendum.

It comes after a difficult few months between Spain and Britain, when dozens of concrete blocks were dropped into Gibraltar Bay to build an artificial reef, followed by lengthy border checks in and out of Spain.

Interviewed over the internet, the chief minister of Gibraltar explained the background to the strained links, and hopes for improved relations with Spain, which claims the territory known for its landmark rock.

Fabian Picardo told Jo Coburn: "Our most important relationship in the world is the relationship with the United Kingdom.

"But the second-most important relationship for us are with the relations with Spain and Morocco, our most immediate neighbours."
