Food banks debate: Edwina Currie and Marc Godwin

A lot of people would suffer in silence without food banks, which make sure people get the help they need by doing the "good thing, the Christian thing", according to a church-based food bank manager.

Marc Godwin from the Chelwood Foodbank Plus in Greater Manchester said they helped people from many different backgrounds and circumstances.

He was debating with former minister Edwina Currie who presented a Daily Politics film saying food banks were not the answer, and people needed other kinds of help.

She told presenter Jo Coburn how she watched people arrive at food banks in cars, and then came out "clutching the food they had not paid for".

Also in the debate was studio guest Vidya Alakeson from the Resolution Foundation.
