A new one-off documentary seeks to lift the lid on the work of Scotland's public toilet attendants.

BBC Alba's Trusadh: Gaisgich nan Goireasan - The Ladies and Gents - found two friends who sing while they clean loos in Aberdeen.

Also, a cleaner in Montrose who decorates urinals with tinsel at Christmas.

A 75-year-old who keeps a loo on Lewis clean said users of the gents were tidier than those who used the ladies.

Kathleen Kidd and Diane Bellingham sing while cleaning council-run facilities in Aberdeen.

Ms Kidd said: "You've got to be happy at your work."

Highland Council employee Janet Stewart said she played music by Van Morrison while she carried out her duties.

She said: "I'm my own boss. I didn't plan on being a cleaner, I wanted to go to college to be a hairdresser but it didn't work out that way."

In Montrose, toilet attendant of 26 years Flo Kenny said she "dresses up" public loos with plants, flowers and teddies. She adds tinsel to the toilets at Christmas time.

She also plays songs by Dolly Parton while looking after the WC.

Ms Kenny said: "I find if I go to another toilet I compare it and say 'oh I wouldn't do that'."

Robert Smith and Mo Gallagher, who keep Glasgow toilets tidy, also feature in the documentary. They said their tasks included estimating average usage of toilet roll sheets.

Another cleaner, Agnes Maclennan, 75, looks after the public toilets and summer camping facilities at the coastal beauty spot of Uig on Lewis.

Her biggest challenge is clearing away sand brought into the toilets from the nearby beach.

She said: "It's not twice a day you need to be here but three times.

"They get well used. They are very popular. The men are cleaner and tidier, far better than the females."

The Ladies and Gents will be broadcast on BBC Alba on 3 June at 21:00.
