Aberdeen school saved after angry council exchanges

Aberdeen's Northfield Academy has been saved from closure after angry exchanges between coalition Lib Dem and SNP councillors.

Education officials had recommended the closure in a bid to address falling school rolls across Aberdeen, and save money.

People defending the futures of Northfield had held demonstrations at the Town House ahead of the meeting.

The education committee also agreed to keep Harlaw Academy open.

Torry and Kincorth will also keep separate secondaries for the time being.

Aberdeen City Council made its short and long-term plans for secondary schooling in the area public earlier this week.

The short-term proposals also include redefining the catchment areas of Aberdeen Grammar and Harlaw Academy.

Options for the longer-term include the retention of 12 secondaries by closing and merging some schools and building new ones.
