Wrexham's HMP Berwyn prison on RICS building design shortlist

A prison, chapel, university and ice arena have all made the shortlist of Wales' annual property awards.

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Awards recognise building projects with innovation, conservation and community benefits.

The shortlist of 24 entries includes Wrexham's new super-prison HMP Berwyn.

The project of the year title will be presented to the overall winner. It was was awarded to the £12m restoration of Cardigan Castle, Ceredigion, in 2016.

Among the building projects shortlisted are:

Cornerstone, the restored former Ebenezer Chapel in Cardiff, has become a new community hub

The conversion of Harlech Castle Hotel in Gwynedd - adjacent to the castle - into new apartments, visitor area, cafe, shop, offices and a bridge

The Olympic-standard 3,000 seat Ice Arena Wales was built in Cardiff International Sports Village and is home to the Cardiff Devils ice hockey team

HMP Berwyn is the redevelopment of a former factory site on Wrexham Industrial Estate. It cost £250m to build and will hold 2,106 prisoners

Pontio is Bangor University's new arts and innovation centre in Gwynedd

The Royal Mint Visitor Centre in Llantrisant, Rhondda Cynon Taff

Urban Village is part of a £25m scheme to regenerate the High Street and Strand Row areas of Swansea
