Universal credit: 'Who puts a turkey on the table?'

Tenants in Swansea who receive universal credit have rent arrears worth four times the amount of those who do not, a housing association has said.

Paul Langley, of Coastal Housing, raised concerns that new claimants in the city, which is due to switch to the new system on 13 December, will not get any payments before Christmas because of the minimum six-week waiting period.

They, and any other new applicants in the five areas of Wales which have already switched, will not be paid until January.

Mr Langley asked: "Who puts a turkey on the table?"

The Department for Work and Pensions said advanced payments were available.
