Luke Evans was jailed for a year after admitting owning a dangerously out of control dog
A dog believed to be an XL bully bit a good Samaritan's face as he tried to help its unconscious owner, a court heard.
Luke Evans, 30, was jailed for 15 months for owning a dangerously out of control dog which injured Huw Hickey on 5 September in Pwllheli.
Caernarfon Crown Court heard the seized animal was believed to be an XL bully, but the breed had not been established.
The judge ordered the breed be assessed before its fate is decided.
Having the animal meant Evans, of Llain y Maen, Blaenau Ffestiniog, in Gwynedd, was in breach of a five-year disqualification order made in 2018 for having a dangerous dog.
On Thursday, Judge Wyn Lloyd Jones banned him at from having a dog until further notice after hearing it was Evans' third dangerous dog case.
In addition to one-year jail sentence, the judge added an additional three months' for revoking a previous community order, taking Evan's sentence to 15 months.
Judge Lloyd Jones told him: "You should be thoroughly ashamed of yourself for everything that happened on that day."
The judge said minor injury was caused to Mr Hickey by the dog, which wasn't on a lead.
"It's pure luck he didn't suffer serious injuries as a result of that attack," he said.
"It could have been a lot worse."
He called Evans record "very, very bad", adding: "Dogs that are dangerously out of control are a serious problem in our society.
"They kill, they cause injury, sometimes serious.
"Those, like you, who are the owners or keepers of dogs, bear a heavy responsibility towards the public."
Rosemary Proctor, defending, called Evans' alcohol problems "deep-seated" and said he'd arrived at court drunk on Tuesday before being remanded in custody.
But she added there were some "positive signs" he may be beginning to turn his life around.
