Bishop 'can see Pope Leo XIV coming to the UK'

The Roman Catholic Bishop of Salford, the Rt Rev John Arnold, has welcomed the election of the first Pope to come from the United States.

Bishop Arnold, who remembered the late Pope John Paul II's visit to Manchester in 1982, said he hoped Pope Leo XIV would one day come to the United Kingdom as pontiff.

Leo XIV, who was born Robert Francis Prevost, was elected as the 267th Pope on Thursday.

His election has been celebrated by the world's 1.4 billion Catholics, with joyous outbursts in his home city of Chicago as well as in Peru, where he served for 20 years.
