Dolphin tangled in ropes freed by kayakers

A pair of kayakers have freed a dolphin they found trapped in ropes from a mooring buoy.

Byron Fisher and Keith Derham spotted the creature after hearing it exhaling loudly as they kayaked off Portland castle beach in Dorset on Tuesday.

After getting closer they noticed the dolphin was turning trying to free itself and alerted the harbour master.

They managed to pull and untangle one of the ropes releasing the dolphin who "swam off jumping out the water".

Mr Fisher said they reported the good news to the harbour master who had dispatched a boat to also help the stricken creature.

He added watching it struggle in the ropes "we could see the dolphin was distressed...it was definitely stuck and we were not leaving until she was free.

"We were so joyful and felt so proud... it was an amazing moment."
