First Sikh sacred music exams launched in UK

Sikh sacred music, also known as Kirtan, has become part of the universal eight-grade music examination system.

Five Indian string instruments, dilruba, taus, esraj, sarangi and saranda, can be studied.

Those who achieve grades six to eight receive UCAS Tariff points which can go towards entry requirements for UK universities.

Kirtan, the devotional singing of the Sikh holy scriptures, the Guru Granth Sahib, has been traced back to the start of the religion in the 15th Century.
