Bioluminescent plankton turns waves bright blue

Look at this stunning electric blue bioluminescent plankton caught on camera off the Welsh coast.

Filmed by Andrew Rees at Dunraven Bay, Vale of Glamorgan, bioluminescence is light emitted by living things as a result of chemical reactions within their bodies.

Plankton, which are tiny creatures that float in the sea, have the ability to emit bioluminescence when they are disturbed by a predator or motion, like the waves.

They were also caught on camera in June at a similar spot and, in June 2023, they were filmed at Oxwich Bay on the Gower peninsula.
