'You meet all these people, they're so resilient'

A documentary filmed in the New Lodge area of Belfast has introduced the “walking wounded” of post-conflict Northern Ireland to international audiences.

Seven years in the making, The Flats has won big at several film festivals.

Its director, Alessandra Celesia, says she never thought she’d make a film about the Troubles.

Filmed in one of Northern Ireland’s most deprived neighbourhoods, New Lodge, the multi-award winning feature follows local man Joe McNally as he grapples with the legacy of the political violence he was born into.
