Watch: Moment a Gustav Klimt painting sells for record amount
The Portrait of Elisabeth Lederer by Austrian artist Gustav Klimt's sold at Sotheby's auction house in New York for $236.4m(£179m), becoming the second most expensive work of art ever sold art auction. The auctioneer hammered the sale at $205 million (£156m), but with buyer's premiums and fees the final price increased more than $31 million (£23.6m).
The painting attracted bids from at least six collectors before it sold. The portrait is one of a few of Klimt's works to survive World War II intact. It depicts Elisabeth Lederer, an heiress and the daughter of one of Klimt's patrons, wearing a white robe and standing in front of a blue tapestry covered in Asian motifs. The painting was predicted to sell for $150m(£114m) before the auction.
