How North West England celebrated VE Day
After more than five years of suffering, on 8 May 1945 the war in Europe was declared officially over.
Hundreds of thousands took to the streets on what was dubbed Victory in Europe (VE) Day after news of Germany's surrender was announced via a broadcast from PM Sir Winston Churchill.
In Manchester they drank the pubs dry according to some headlines, while in Lancashire crowds grumbled about the lack of organisation for such a historic day.
