Ukraine crisis: Fear of attack ahead of vote in Donetsk

Ukraine is preparing to hold perhaps its most important election since splitting from the Soviet Union in 1991, with hopes that it might bring an end to months of political crisis.

Pro-Russia separatists in the east say the vote will not happen there, and that two regions are now independent.

The Ukrainian government insists the election will take place across the country, and that the secession is illegal.
