An agreement has been made in principle for a new bus contract in Guernsey, the Environment Department has announced.

The department and HCT Group have agreed on the main terms of the island's bus service.

It said the agreed document would be reviewed by lawyers before the contract was signed.

Steve Smith, the department's chief officer, said: "We look forward to matters reaching a conclusion soon."

Dai Powell, chief executive officer of the HCT Group, said the company had undertaken a considerable amount of preparatory activity to ensure that it would be ready to commence operating Guernsey's buses on 1 April.
