Guernsey Election 2016: Rise in voter registrations

Nearly 600 more people signed up on the electoral roll compared to 2012

More islanders have signed up to the electoral roll in time for the general election than four years ago.

The number of people registered to vote in 2016 stands at 30,320 compared to 29,741 in 2012.

Figures rose in each of the seven electoral districts for the election on 27 April, which will see fewer deputies elected in a smaller States.

Registrar General Mark de Garis said he was pleased to have exceeded the 2012 figures and to have broken 30,000.

He said minor changes may still be made as the "final administrative checks and procedures are still ongoing".

No target was publically set for numbers on the electoral roll after a move to get 35,000 people registered in 2012 failed.

Mr de Garis said: "We haven't shied away from seeking to engage with people who have appeared disengaged with politics and the team expended a huge effort through numerous road shows and other proactive sign-up initiatives.

"Given those challenges I am pleased with the final total, although I would clearly wish that all 49,500 people eligible to register on the roll had chosen to do so."
