World Beard and Moustache Championships: The wackiest beards go on show

The international World Beard and Moustache Championships took place in Belgium over the weekend.

The first Championship took place in Germany in 1990.

Hundreds of hairy men from around the world take part in the competition where competitors have to style their beards in all kinds of wacky ways.

There are sixteen traditional categories in The World Beard and Moustache Championships. These categories are broken down into three groups– Moustaches, Partial Beards, and Full Beards.

The three day event has been held every two years in a different country since 1995.

A seventeenth category, the Alaskan Whaler, was added in the 2009 Championships held in Anchorage. Sometimes beards are only part of thw hole fancy dress occasion!

The next competition will be held in Auckland in New Zealand in 2021.
