The new season looks set for release on 8 March, but already its theme has been all but confirmed

If recent events in Fortnite have left you scratching your head, don't worry, we are here to help with a little history lesson.

Over the weekend Epic Games, the creators behind the game, gave a rather large clue about the next season in the form of a large hand holding onto a mysterious box.

That box turned out to be Pandora's Box - collectively players were encouraged to shoot it down, and, when it landed, it opened its contents into the game's universe.

Pandora's Box is part of Greek mythology and is one of a number of clues about the new season's theme. But what exactly is Greek mythology?

Some of the ancient Greek coins featured images of their gods

Greek mythology is a collection of stories originally told by ancient Greeks - about gods, heroes, creatures and rituals - that were passed down over thousands of years.

The ancient Greeks believed that gods and goddesses watched over them and, though they may have looked similar to humans in some ways, they were far more powerful and lived forever.

It was believed that each god had power over a different part of the world or life.

The Parthenon in Athens was built for the goddess Athena

The Greeks built temples for their gods and goddesses, some of which can still be seen today, like the Parthenon in Athens in Greece.

The temple was built for Athena, goddess of wisdom and warfare, who was the patron goddess of the city.

The Parthenon contained some of these ancient Greek sculptures of their gods - but these were removed and brought to Britain in the 1800s, something which has recently been at the centre of a row.

Players were encouraged to shoot the box as part of an event

Pandora's Box is at the centre of a rather gruesome part of Greek mythology.

Zeus (Athena's dad), who was believed to be king of the gods, asked Prometheus and his brother Epimetheus to populate the world.

Against Zeus' wishes Prometheus stole and gave man fire, Zeus punished him by having a huge eagle attack him every day.

Zeus then ordered another god, Hephaestus, to create the first woman - Pandora - but demanded she is curious about all things.

Pandora is given a box but told not to look inside, but she eventually did, allowing hatred and despair to escape into the world before slamming it shut - leaving just hope inside.

So now you know!

Pandora's Box was opened in Fortnite at the weekend, but the result in the game's universe is yet to be seen.
