The VMAs show saw lots of artists and music makers celebrated throughout the evening, with plenty of female pop stars winning big awards this year.

Sabrina Carpenter had been nominated in eight categories and ended up scooping up three awards.

Short n' Sweet picked up Album of the Year, while she was also named Best Pop Artist, as well as taking home the visual effects award for her song Manchild.

It's been a busy and successful year for Sabrina, who made UK chart history last summer with her songs 'Espresso' and 'Please Please Please' holding the top two spots at the same time for three weeks in a row.

Carpenter also took to the stage and performed her song 'Tears' from her new album.

Ariana Grande had a great night, also picking up three awards.

However, going into the night, it was Lady Gaga who had led the way with 12 nominations and she also ended up walking away with the most awards.

She won four awards and was named Artist of the Year, beating the likes of Taylor Swift, Beyoncé and Kendrick Lamar to the title.

Collecting the award on stage, Lady Gaga explained how important the title was for her.

She said: "I cannot begin to tell you what this means to me.

"Being an artist is an attempt to connect the souls of people all over the world...a craft meant for reaching into someone's heart, where it grows its roots, and reminding them to dream."

Lady Gaga also won the best direction and art direction awards for her song 'Abracadabra', as well as landing the best collaboration category for her duet with Bruno Mars.
