Huge win as Grimsby knock giants Man United out of League Cup

It was a huge and dramatic night in the world of football as Grimsby Town knocked six-time winners Manchester United out of the League Cup.

Grimsby play in League Two which is three leagues below the Red Devils, who play in the top division of English football - the Premier League.

The Lincolnshire club were 2-0 up at half-time, before United scored twice to draw level, meaning that penalties would be needed to decide the winner.

After a whopping twenty-six spot kicks in total - Grimsby eventually won 12-11 - sending the home fans wild.

Grimsby Town were playing in front of a sellout 8,647 crowd at their home ground, Blundell Park, with the hosts making a stronger start to the game.

Two goals in eight minutes from Charles Vernam and Tyrell Warren League meant that the League Two side had a 2-0 lead by half-time.

Bryan Mbeumo pulled back a goal for Man United in the 75th minute, before a late header from Harry Maguire made it 2-2 at full-time.

As there is no extra time played in League Cup fixtures, this meant that the game headed to penalties to decide the winner.

It was a thrilling shoot-out with the teams neck-and-neck throughout.

Grimsby's Clarke Oduor and Manchester United's Matheus Cunha were the only two to miss their penalties, as each side's 11 players took a spot-kick - including both goalkeepers!

The players then went again and, after Grimsby's Darragh Burns scored to make it 12-11, Mbeumo hit the crossbar - meaning that United were knocked out of the competition.

As soon as the game was over, Grimsby Town fans ran on to the pitch to celebrate the shock result with their players.

Their unexpected win against six-time champions Manchester United is widely seen as one of the biggest upsets in League Cup history.

It's thought that Grimsby's squad is worth around £3.1m, compared to United's £765m players.

How have people reacted to Grimsby's win?

After the match, Grimsby Town manager David Artell said it was a "terrific night for the football club, the whole town and the community".

He added: "The lads were terrific. They deserve every plaudit, every credit and accolade that will come their way.

"It's one we've been working towards for a long time - to put this club back on the map.

"I appreciate it's one night. There's a long way to go, we've just started off the league - we're unbeaten this season - and nights like this don't come around very often," Artell explained.

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim praised Grimsby saying that "the best team won, the only team that was on the pitch."

He added: "The way we start the game without any intensity, we were completely lost.

"In this moment, we need to focus on the weekend and then we have time to think."
