A term made popular by singer Charli XCX had been named Collins Dictionary Word of the Year 2024.

Social media feeds have been filled with people having a 'brat summer', so much so that 'brat' tops the list as "one of the most talked about words of 2024".

The word was, until recently, most commonly used to describe a child behaving badly, but this summer its meaning has changed.

It's now defined as being "characterised by a confident and independent attitude".

Alex Beecroft, managing director of Collins, said: "With many of this year's notable words being popularised by generations Z and Alpha, we can confidently say this is the most 'brat' Word of the Year list ever."

Another word getting a nod from Collins Dictionary is 'era' - inspired by Taylor Swift's massive Eras Tour.

The dictionary described it as "a period of one's life or career that is of a distinctive character".

'Delulu' (short for delusional, being unrealistic with your expectations) and 'yapping' (talking for a long time about things that aren't really important) have also made this year's list.
