Stars of Wicked, Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo have both received Academy Award nominations and could pick up Oscars for their performances in the blockbuster movie.

The Academy Awards, or the Oscars, are the most famous of the year's movie awards.

Cynthia Erivo has been nominated in the leading actress category, whilst Ariana Grande has been recognised in the supporting actress category.

The musical film is also nominated for Best Picture, and is celebrated for its achievements in sound, editing, visual effects and original score too.

The winners will be announced at a ceremony on Sunday, 2 March, in Los Angeles.

There are lots of movies you may recognise in the best animated feature film category.

The new Wallace & Gromit movie, Vengeance Most Fowl has made the list, along with Disney's Inside Out 2, Flow and The Wild Robot.

Wallace and Gromit creator Nick Park said the nomination came as a "surprise and real privilege".

Why are Academy Awards called "Oscars"?

The official name of the award is an Academy Award of Merit.

However, most people in the film industry and beyond know them as 'Oscars'.

The reason behind this isn't entirely clear, but one theory is that a woman called Margaret Herrick, who worked for the organisation that hands out the awards, saw the award statue and said it looked like her Uncle Oscar.

Over 100 years later, they are still known by that name!
