If only you had a time machine and could travel forward to April 2025...

Well, mark your calendars, because Ncuti Gatwa's Doctor will be back for his second season on 12 April, 2025.

That means it's not long to wait before we're back in the TARDIS for more adventures through time and space.

Promising plenty of twists, turns, and a new face joining the crew - here's what we know about the new season so far.

As always, the Doctor's companions are key to the adventures ahead. In this season, we'll see Ruby Sunday, played by Millie Gibson back in action although, judging from the trailer, possibly away from the TARDIS and working with UNIT (Unified Intelligence Taskforce), instead.

However, the Doctor won't be alone in his time-travelling blue box, as joining the cast is Varada Sethu in the role of Belinda Chandra.

Varada also played a different character, Mundy Flynn, in the season one episode 'Boom'.

But Ruby and Belinda aren't the only ones joining the adventure.

Doctor Who: Guest stars and a twist...

Rose Ayling-Ellis, known for her work on EastEnders, who also won Strictly Come Dancing as the show's first ever deaf contestant in 2021, will be appearing as a special guest this season.

Meanwhile returning stars include the mysterious Mrs Flood, played by another famous actress, Anita Dobson, with showrunner Russell T Davies telling Newsround back in December that "she's got some big surprises".

The show's social media account also recently confirmed that Susan Triad, played by Susan Twist, will be back for the second season, too.

The character had an important role throughout season one that was tied to the big reveal of the Doctor's old enemy Sutekh in the series finale.

Is Ncuti Gatwa leaving Doctor Who?

Will there be a regeneration at the end of Ncuti Gatwa's second season?

The BBC responded to rumours that the actor might be leaving at the end of series 2, saying, "We never comment on the Doctor and future storylines."

Gatwa joined the show in 2023, taking over the lead role of the Doctor after Jodie Whittaker left.

He's the 15th version of the iconic character. The Doctor is an alien from the planet Gallifrey that can change into a new body, meaning actors can leave with the show able to continue.

Since Doctor Who was brought back to television screens 20 years ago, most actors have stayed in the role for at least three seasons.

Christopher Eccleston left after just one season - way back in 2005. David Tennant was in the role for the longest amount of time since, having played the character for three series and nine specials, most recently during the 60th anniversary in 2023.

The fourth Doctor, Tom Baker, has the record, though. He was the Doctor for seven seasons between 1974 and 1981.
