Trailer - Doctor Who: Joy to the World

When it comes to Christmas traditions, it's turkey, tinsel and Tardis... In that order.

Doctor Who is back for another festive adventure in Joy to the World, as we visit the Time Hotel, where the stay is anything but ordinary and guests can open room doors to any point in Earth's history.

Asked if he was given that opportunity in real life, Ncuti Gatwa who plays the Doctor said he'd go to "ancient Egypt, to see how the pyramids were built".

Writer Steven Moffat, who has returned to Doctor Who for this Christmas episode, wouldn't go anywhere: "without being too sentimental the past absolutely sucks and the future is uncertain.

"I'm very happy right here. Can I just get this day on a loop?" he asked.

So where would you go? Let us know in the comments.

This episode marks one year of Ncuti Gatwa in the role of the Doctor, after he faced baby-eating goblins in his first full episode, last Christmas Day.

This time our hero meets a new friend called Joy, played by Nicola Coughlan, who checks into a London hotel in 2024, only to discover a secret door leading to danger, dinosaurs, the Doctor and the Time Hotel.

Speaking at a special screening of the episode, Gatwa admits he still feels nervous, despite being in the role for a whole year now: "My palms are sweating, I'm so nervous. The show has had a huge impact for so many years. I mean, it's part of our cultural fabric in this country, so it's quite something each time to watch a new season or to watch a new episode, and to be like, 'that's me!' and it's a special thing at Christmas as well."

Doctor Who Christmas special: What to expect from Joy to the World

From goblins last year, to dinosaurs in 2024, one of the doors to the Time Hotel takes guests back 65 million years and sees the Doctor and Joy come face to face with a T.rex.

"Lots of fun. It wasn't a real dinosaur, unfortunately," said Ncuti, explaining what the actors had to look at.

"The dinosaur that we interacted with, I think someone drew Casper the ghost, on a huge white foam piece on a stick."

The scene sees the dinosaur crash into the prehistoric hotel room, which then starts to collapse with the Doctor and Joy inside.

"The hotel room was set on a gimbal and so it felt like we were on a rollercoaster the whole day," Ncuti added.

'The Doctor is alarmingly close to Santa Claus'

When asked if it's any different coming up with a Doctor Who Christmas episode compared to normal episodes, writer Steven Moffat said: "Yeah, it's just Doctor Who, but more so really."

Explaining that Matt Smith, who played the 11th Doctor, compared the character to Santa, Moffatt continued: "Doctor Who's a Christmassy kind of show and the Doctor is alarmingly close to Santa Claus, as I think Matt Smith once said 'he basically is Father Christmas, but without the presents, not fat and an alien'."

So, can Joy and the Doctor get to the bottom of a deadly plan that is unfolding and save Christmas – everywhere, all at once?
