Ballon d'Or winner Aitana Bonmatí has withdrawn from the Spain squad after breaking her leg in training.

The Barcelona midfielder fell awkwardly during a session at the weekend, with tests later revealing a fractured left fibula.

Bonmatí is widely considered to be one of the greatest players in the women's game and has won football's top award for the last three years in a row.

Bonmatí fell during a practice session at Spain's national training base in Madrid on Sunday.

According to a statement by the Spanish Football Federation, Bonmatí finished the morning session in pain after a bad landing.

The Federation confirmed that she had suffered a fracture in her left fibula and that Bonmatí "will return to Barcelona and re-join her club to begin her recovery period."

Spain are the current holders of the women's Nations League title and are hoping to retain their title this week.

They host Germany in the second leg of this year's final on Tuesday - after last week's first leg finished goalless.

Current Ballon d'Or holder Aitana Bonmatí is one of the most talked about players in the women's game.

In September, the midfielder became the first woman to win football's top award for three years in a row.

In fact, her trophy cabinet is looking pretty full.

Bonmatí is also the current holder of the Best Fifa Women's Player, which is presented to the footballer considered to have performed the best over the previous calendar year.

She was named Player of the Tournament by Uefa at this summer's women's Euros.

While at the last World Cup in 2023, Bonmatí was awarded the Fifa Golden Ball Award after also being chosen as the tournament's best player.

She was also named the Champions League's player of the season by Uefa.
