An advertising campaign for Ed Sheeran's new album, Play, has got fans talking.

And not just about his music but also about old phones.

The award winning pop star has popped-up a load of pink phone booths in cities including London, Amsterdam and Madrid.

Inside the phone boxes, fans can pick up an old phone and hear a little preview of what's to come on his new album.

But in the days before mobile phones, phone boxes were made not just for listening, but for talking too.

Phone booths or phone boxes were a way for people to contact each other when they were out and about.

They were easy to spot as they were (usually) bright red.

Phone boxes were usually pretty easy to find

People would simply put in a coin, or use a pre-pay card, and they could call anyone across the country who had a phone in their house or office.

If you knew the number you could even call other phone boxes.

They were like mobile phones but not.... mobile.

Since people stopped using them as much, old phone boxes have been used for all sorts of things,

Some have been turned into book swaps, for people to share amazing stories once they have done reading them.

Others have been saved from destruction because they're so rare - like some of the cream coloured phone boxes which can only be found in Hull.
