Animated films top box office in 2024 - which is your favourite?

Animation seems to be as popular as ever this year, with two of the biggest film releases of 2024 so far being Despicable Me 4 and Inside Out 2.

Released on 14 June, Disney Pixar's Inside Out 2 hit the cinemas just in time for the start of the summer holidays and has smashed many box office records since its release.

As of July this year, it was the highest grossing animated film ever - meaning it had earned more money than any other animated film before it.

Hot on its tail, Universal's kooky yellow minions made a comeback in Despicable Me 4 - the latest instalment in their franchise.

In August it became the third-biggest film release of 2024.

Summer is an important time for the movie industry with movie studios hoping their latest movie release will become a summer blockbuster.

Last summer Barbie hit cinemas boosting box office revenue and ticket sales across the world.

There had been worries about summer 2024 as film releases were pushed back due to writers’ and actors’ strikes in 2023.

But many big movie studios like Disney, Universal and DreamWorks know animated family movies can be successful over summer when lots of kids are off from school and looking for things to do.

And now you might be wondering, are there any other animated films making an appearance this year that could knock Inside Out 2 and Despicable Me 4 off their top spots?

Moana 2

Moana is now a big sister to the adorable Simea

Moana 2 will take us on another adventure across the oceans.

A second trailer for the upcoming feature film was released at the Disney D23 conference in August.

It showed Moana continuing her adventures on the seas around her home of Motunui, sailing to nearby islands to reconnect her island with the world.

We also find out that Moana has become a big sister in her time off screen!

Moana 2 will be released on 27 November 2024, 8 years after the original film came out.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is an upcoming action adventure comedy film based on the video game series

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is out on December 20 as a Christmas treat for fans.

However there is yet to be an official trailer for the movie.

Fans on social media are very excited about the introduction of an iconic Sonic character - Shadow, who was teased in an image for the movie.

Mufasa: The Lion King

Mufasa: The Lion King will roar into cinemas - also on 20 December like Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

The film like the 2019 adaptation of the 1994 film The Lion King is described as a photorealistic animated movie.

In the movie we learn more about the siblings Mufasa and Scar as young lions.
