Some schools are getting strict on socks!

If you were asked to make a list of different items in a school uniform, what would you include?

A jumper, shirt, trousers, maybe a tie? But would you include socks in that list?

Well, a recent survey of parents and carers found that almost three in four of their children went to a school where there were rules on socks.

Like every school has a different uniform, each school's rules around uniforms tend to be slightly different too.

Some schools require pupils to have costlier branded items as part of their uniform, whereas some let pupils wear plain items as long as they are a certain colour or style.

A survey, which was part of a report by the Department for Education (DFE), asked more than 1,200 parents and carers about uniform rules at their children's school.

In 2023 it found that 72% said the school their children went to had a policy around socks.

The Department of Education's guidance on school uniform says: “Whilst it may be appropriate to require a certain colour for socks, requiring them to have the school logo would be unnecessary.”

The survey found eight per cent of families reported that their school required branded socks or tights.

The new Labour government has said it will limit the number of branded items of uniform and PE kit that schools can require.
