Surfer rides enormous storm wave in Portugal

A surfer is thought to have equalled a world record by surfing on an enormous wave in Portugal.

Brazilian Carlos Burle was out surfing at Praia do Norte in Portugal when the St Jude storm that had hit parts of the UK early on Monday, whipped up a huge wave.

Carlos rode the wave on his surfboard and is likely to have broken a world record set by Garrett McNamara.

Garrett set the world record in 2011 by surfing a wave almost 24 metres high on the same beach.

Surfing in stormy conditions can be very dangerous. Carlos had to rescue his girlfriend Maya from the waves after she was knocked unconscious.

Luckily Maya is said to be recovering well.
