Why is Ukraine divided?

Ukraine has been in the news because of big protests taking place in the country's capital, Kiev.

Those protests have become very violent. Many people have lost their lives and hundreds more have been injured.

Police have been trying to remove the protesters, but they are standing their ground - both sides are using violence.

Smaller protests have spread to other cities, mostly in the west of the country.
