Sun safety needs 'more than sun cream'

Skin experts are warning people not to feel "invincible" in the sun just because they are wearing sun cream.

The Sun gives off UV light which can cause sunburn and skin cancer.

Dr Julie Sharp from charity Cancer Research UK said people often feel "invincible" after putting on sun cream and may spend longer in the sun as a result.

She said: "Sunscreen has a role, but you shouldn't just rely on this to protect your skin."

Scientists at the University of Manchester studied the effect of UV light on mice.

The research, published in Nature, found that although sun cream was good, it shouldn't be the only way we protect ourselves from the sun.

Professor Richard Marais from the University of Manchester said "wearing hats and loose fitting clothing, and seeking shade when the sun is at its strongest" were sensible steps to stay safe.
