UKIP wins second local vote

The UK Independence Party (UKIP) will be celebrating today after another one of its members was elected into parliament.

Mark Reckless used to represent Rochester and Strood as a member of the Conservative party.

But he changed his political views in September and joined UKIP, a party which campaigns for the United Kingdom to leave the European Union.

This meant the people living in Rochester and Strood had to have another vote, to decide who to send to parliament.

Mr Reckless received the most votes - 16,867 in total.

His rival, the Conservative candidate Kelly Tolhurst, received 13,947 votes.

UKIP now has two members of parliament.
