UK farmers growing rare and valuable truffles

Truffles are some of the rarest and most valuable food in the world, and some UK farmers are attempting to grow them.

Truffles are a type of fungus, similar to mushrooms, and grow underground in wooded areas.

You can only usually find them in places like France, Italy and Croatia, and their locations are kept top secret, because they are so rare.

The most expensive truffle in existence was sold last year in New York for £40,000.

Truffles used to be popular in the UK, but now they are incredibly difficult to find.

One farmer called Dr Paul Thomas planted truffle fungus in 20 different locations around the country with the hope of farming truffles in the future.

He uses dogs to help him find the truffles, as their sense of smell is more sensitive than a human's.
