Why has the price of food become more expensive?

If you're someone who likes spending your pocket money at the supermarket, or if you help with the family food shop, you might have noticed that some items are getting more expensive.

There are lots of reasons why this can happen - big global events, decisions made by governments, and even the weather can all play a part.

The prices of all the things people buy are added together to work out something called the inflation figure.

This shows whether the cost of things is going up or down each month.

When inflation is high, it means the cost of living goes up too - so things like food, household bills, and clothes can become more expensive.

Currently, food prices in the UK are going up faster than they have been for the last year and a half, according to a survey by the British Retail Consortium.

Emma-Louise went to meet BBC reporter Colletta Smith to find out more.
