Acres of protected Amazon rainforest being destroyed for road to climate summit

A huge four-lane highway is being built in the Amazon rainforest, destroying protected areas.

The new road is being built for the COP30 climate summit in the Brazilian city of Belém, which will host the environmental conference in November.

With around 50,000 people, including world leaders, expected to attend, the local government is trying to improve access and facilities in the city, and says it's being done in a sustainable way.

But many critics say cutting down trees and destroying the rainforest habitat of many animals will have a lasting impact on the area.

The BBC's Ione Wells reports from Brazil.
