Rain ruined the prospect of an exciting finish as Derbyshire and Essex had to settle for a draw.

The hosts were 21 runs shy of victory on 202-6, with Wes Durston unbeaten on 90, when a heavy downpour put paid to their hopes of winning the game.

Earlier, Essex were dismissed for 331, South African Greg Smith finishing with figures of 4-63.
