Warwickshire v Yorkshire: Tykes beat Bears by an innings again

England Under-19s international spinner Karl Carver claimed a match haul of 3-65 on his first-class debut

Yorkshire stayed top of the County Championship as they completed their second innings win of the summer over Warwickshire with a day to spare.

After being bowled out for 228 in their first innings on day one, the Bears began their second innings 194 behind.

But failing to post a 50 partnership in the whole match cost them dear.

Teenage spinner Karl Carver claimed two wickets on his debut at Edgbaston as the Bears were bowled out for 186 to lose by an innings and eight runs.

The England Under-19s international had already taken his maiden first-class scalp in the Bears first innings.

But the 18-year-old slow left-armer from Northallerton then followed that up by taking two of the final three Warwickshire wickets to fall as, after opener William Porterfield top scored with 42, the Bears tail-enders crept within eight runs of making Yorkshire bat again.

Pacemen Steve Patterson and Ryan Sidebottom each claimed three victims, while Jack Brooks' five scalps took Division One's leading wicket taker to 42 for the season.

Yorkshire also demolished Warwickshire at Headingley in May, winning by an innings and 155 runs, inspired by another big first-innings score - the fourth of six 400-plus totals the Tykes have run up in 10 matches this summer.

Dougie Brown's Bears, who won by an innings themselves at Northampton just six days ago, are now 37 points adrift of top spot.

Bears director of cricket Dougie Brown told BBC Sport:

"Four-day cricket is about sustaining pressure for long periods. We managed to apply a bit of pressure but didn't manage it for long enough.

"There were a lot of dismissals that were needless, guys maybe not being able to sit tight for long periods. If you're going to be competitive in games you can't have guys gifting their wickets.

"Yorkshire are very confident in their style of play. They've got batters who score consistent first innings runs. They've got 400-plus almost every time they've batted first. We haven't."

Yorkshire head coach Jason Gillespie:

"We spoke at the start of game about things we wanted to improve on. I thought our catching was fantastic and just about everything in our performance as well.

"We were positive with the bat and our bowlers pitched the ball up and looked to get wickets off the front."

"The failure of Warwickshire to establish a 50 partnership across both innings was testimony to a lack of application from them and to a relentless approach from the Yorkshire attack which included both ends of the experience spectrum.

"England paceman Ryan Sidebottom, at 36, was unerringly accurate, claiming three second-innings wickets, while 18-year-old spinner Karl Carver took the final wicket at the end of a promising first-class debut.

"Yorkshire look like a Championship winning squad. They will now be hoping that Warwickshire do them a favour next week when they play the Tykes main rivals' Nottinghamshire."
