Newport County youth team player Regan Poole is having a trial at Premier League club Manchester United.

Poole, 16, who is currently on a two-year scholarship deal at Rodney Parade, trained with the united reserve team on Thursday at Carrington.

Newport's youth development coach Mike Flynn said there's been "a lot of clubs watching" the Cardiff-born centre-back.

"Manchester United have been very impressed with him and decided to make the first move," said Flynn.

"I spoke with Regan earlier and he's absolutely buzzing. He's gone up there and done well."

Flynn says Poole has taken everything in his stride and has the potential to make the grade.

"He's very good on the ball," said Flynn, "he's got a great spring on him, he's fit, he's strong.

"He's literally got most of the attributes that I think he can go on and become a top player.

"As long as he keeps working hard and improving and always wanting to learn, he's definitely going to have a great career.

"If the move comes off is down to the club and Manchester United, but I hope it comes off for him because I really think he can go on and make a great career."

Although Newport could be in danger of losing Poole, manager Justin Edinburgh says two of his players turned down loan moves away from the club before the summer transfer window closed.

"There were one or two enquiries latter part of last week but the players weren't keen to move," said the former Tottenham defender.

"They wanted to stay and fight for their places and I respect that."

Striker Rene Howe had surgery on Thursday on his thigh injury. The problem is expected to keep him out for the rest of the season.

County's first team secured their first win of the League Two season in their last match with a 1-0 victory away at Portsmouth.

But the Nato summit in Newport means Newport do not have a game until they host Cambridge United on 8 September.
