Rob Edwards won just two league games as Tranmere manager

Tranmere have sacked Rob Edwards after just five months as manager, with the club bottom of the Football League.

Edwards, 41, took over in May after the club's relegation from League One, but they have won only two of their 12 league games so far this term.

The 1-0 loss to Plymouth was a fourth consecutive league defeat and they visit 23rd-placed Oxford on Saturday.

"With us bottom of League Two, It was decided this was the right time to make the break," said chairman Mark Palios.

"I remain committed to the vision that Rob shared, of playing free-flowing and skilful football.

"If we are to achieve the required results in future, it is clear that we need to strengthen the squad further.

"I will make an announcement later this week regarding who will take charge of the team for the match against Oxford."

Edwards - a former defender at Bristol City, Preston, Blackpool and Exeter - was in his first managerial role following his three-year spell as a coach and then assistant manager at Exeter.

He was asked if he was concerned about his job after Saturday's loss to Plymouth and told BBC Radio Merseyside: "I'm worried. I've been worried for about five weeks.

"I was brought into the club in the summer, the club changed owners and now we're bottom of the Football League - it's not looking great is it?

"Whether I'm here or not, I think if you've got players in your side who don't want to fight and don't really want the ball, you're going to struggle - and that's what we've got at the moment."
