He joins centre-back Leon Legge, who joined from League One side Gillingham, as the U's second signing ahead of the 2015-16 campaign.

"I'm absolutely delighted to be joining Cambridge, it's a fantastic football club," he told the club website., external

Roberts has twice captained sides to promotion through the League Two play-offs - Fleetwood in 2014 and Stevenage in 2011.

"The people involved with the club that I have met so far have got a clear vision of where they want to go.

"The club has got a fantastic set of fans. I've had some great battles when I've been here in the past.

"Now I'm on the Cambridge side of it, I want to make sure I give 100% and we can achieve as much as we can as a team."

After making his professional debut with Crewe Alexandra in 2003, Roberts had spells with Chester City, Halifax Town and Northwich Victoria.
