Leeds United: Neil Redfearn returns to academy role

Former Barnsley midfielder Neil Redfearn has also previously managed Scarborough and Northwich Victoria.

Former Leeds United head coach Neil Redfearn has decided to return to his previous role as the club's academy boss, BBC Radio Leeds reports.

The 49-year-old was in charge for 33 games last season before Uwe Rosler was appointed in May.

Redfearn guided Leeds to 15th in the Championship but chairman Massimo Cellino called him "a baby" and "weak".

Redfearn was entitled to a one-year rolling deal as head of their academy, as part of his contract as head coach.

He joined Leeds as the academy chief in January 2009 and when he was appointed as head coach on 1 November, Redfearn said: "There is the caveat that I can go back to the academy if it does not work out."

Rosler is Leeds' fifth manager in a year.

Manager Brian McDermott left the club last May. McDermott was replaced by former Forest Green boss David Hockaday, but he lasted just six games before being sacked in August and his replacement, Slovenian Darko Milanic, was dismissed after failing to win any of his six games in charge.

It was then that Cellino turned to academy boss and former Barnsley, Crystal Palace and Oldham midfielder Redfearn.
