Oxford United have completed the signing of goalkeeper Sam Slocombe on a free transfer following his release by Scunthorpe United last month.

The 27-year-old has agreed a two-year contract at the Kassam Stadium, having featured just 15 times last season for the hometown club he joined in 2008.

He helped the Iron win promotion from League Two in 2014 and believes he can play a similar role for his new club.

"There's great potential here to go up," Slocombe told BBC Radio Oxford.

He joins midfielders Kemar Roofe and Liam Sercombe and striker Ryan Taylor as new additions secured on permanent deals by U's manager Michael Appleton ahead of next season.

"The manager doesn't just want to go up a division and stabilise, he has a long-term plan that will increase the club's popularity and what it does within the divisions," Slocombe added.

"At this point in my career, it's a good opportunity to take on a new challenge and an exciting prospect."
