Championship club Preston North End have signed goalkeeper Chris Kirkland on a one-year contract.

Kirkland, 34, had rejected an offer to stay at Sheffield Wednesday.

The former Liverpool and Wigan player made 91 appearances for Wednesday and is Preston's eighth signing of the summer.

"I turned down an offer at Sheffield in the summer. I just wanted to try something new and I'm delighted to be here," Kirkland told the club website., external

Kirkland will compete for a starting place with England youth international Jordan Pickford, 21, who has signed on a season-long loan from Premier League Sunderland.
