Ryan Ledson has captained England at youth international levels

Everton midfielder Ryan Ledson has joined League Two side Cambridge United on loan until 3 January.

The 18-year-old's only first-team appearance for the Toffees since coming through their youth system came in the Europa League in December 2014.

Liverpool-born Ledson also captained England Under-17s to European Championship success in 2014.

"Everton have got some really high hopes for him, but we have to remember he is a young player," said Derry.

He told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "He's coming out of his comfort zone at Everton to try to stake a claim to push on into that next development phase.

"But in terms of his ability, it's undoubted. Joe Royle looks after the young boys up there and monitors all their loans, so to come from somebody like him, I feel like we've got a real coup here."
