Garry Thompson heads Wycombe in front at Adams Park

Wycombe ended Oxford United's 11-match unbeaten run as Jason McCarthy's goal gave them victory at Adams Park.

After a competitive first half, they went in front when Garry Thompson headed home Joe Jacobson's corner.

Oxford responded with sub Patrick Hoban laying the ball off for Liam Sercombe to fire his 10th goal of the season.

Defender McCarthy restored the lead from Jacobson's free-kick and Michael Harriman ensured the win by clearing Sercombe's late header off the line.

The defeat dropped Oxford one place to third in the League Two table, two points behind new leaders Plymouth, with Wycombe ninth.

Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth told BBC Three Counties Radio:

"I'm really glad we came away with the three points because we really deserved it.

"The fans were brilliant today, it was great to see the stands so full, and there is no doubt we will go from strength to strength together.

"The season hasn't gone as smoothly as last season, with decisions going against us, and it's going to be tough against Luton (on Boxing Day), but if we perform how we did today then we will definitely be in with a shout."
